Did you ever stop and wonder why you are here? What is your reason for being on this world at this time? What is the meaning of life?

It turns out that the meaning of your life is whatever you decide it is. Unfortunately most people have not decided. They get so caught up in all the random little things that life throws at them that they do not see the big picture. They are lost in the details of life. They might think that the purpose of life is to go to school and study hard, get a good job and settle down and have a family. Those are just the details. In order to get at the meaning of your life, you have to ask yourself WHY you are doing all those things. Why did you choose the career you did? Why did you choose your spouse? Why did you choose to have, or not have, children?

Most of all, it is time to ask yourself what it is that you value. What is most important to you? Why do you vote for the politicians you vote for? Why do you go to your particular church, or to none at all? How do you choose your favorite charities to donate to, or places to volunteer? What is it that you would like everyone to be saying about you at your funeral? What would you like them to remember you for?

The most important question is to ask yourself is "If I could be, do, or have anything I want regardless of time, money, energy, or other people, what would it be" Most of us have learned in life that there is no point even thinking about anything we might want that happens to cost too much or be too impractical or get in the way of what someone else wants. If we remove all those restraints in our mind, we can get a better idea of what we really want for ourselves.

Once you have got to know yourself intimately, once you know who you really are and what you really want, then you can find your mission in life. Maybe you find that your biggest joy is teaching people things that are meaningful to them. That's your mission in life. Maybe you find out that your biggest joy is creating art that moves people to tears. That's your mission in life. Maybe you find that your biggest joy is building more efficient machines. That's your mission in life. When it comes down to it, your mission in life is to do whatever you enjoy most, which is probably the thing you are best at too.

For an example, let us say you decide your mission in life is to teach people. You might choose a career in education. You might volunteer teaching people about history at the local museum. You might choose to have children of your own for the joy of teaching them. All the details of your life are wrapped around your central mission, your purpose in life. It is a purpose that you chose yourself. It is what gives your life meaning. More importantly, it gives all those little details meaning too. It is what makes your life truly worth living
